Ghost Whisperer

Ghost Whisperer, Season 2
Paramount Home Video

Ghost Whisperer quickly grew to be more than “I see/I talk” to dead people. The CBS show stars once longtime ingenue Jennifer Love Hewitt, now a grown-up (and still way too cute) woman as Melinda Gordon, helping folks to resolve their issues with their dear departed. Unlike the also psychic/metaphysical but crime-oriented thriller, Medium, Ghost Whisperer has a family feel – perhaps it’s the CBS thing.

Many shows find their footing in a second season or just grow and develop, and that’s the current case here. Season 2 begins by wrapping up a cliffhanger for the first season but with ramifications that run through a number of other episodes.

Hewitt’s character’s new husband, Jim, played by David Conrad, and her new business partner, Delia Banks, played by Camryn Manheim, play pivitol roles, while Jay Mohr appears as a professor, Rick Paye – a Dr. Palfrey (though not Dr. Strange – too bad)-type who has a fascination for the occult and paranormal. Both he and Manheim’s character learn of Melinda’s “gift,” and another Ghost Whisperer turns up by the end of the season.

The six-DVD set includes 22 episodes with more story arcs this time around, plus episode commentary options by the series producers, along with behind-the-scenes featurettes, plus eight webisodes and an interactive Ghost Whisperer Crystal Ball mind reading game. Not as scary as Supernatural or as intense as Medium, Ghost Whisperer still has its moments as a spooky show, though, in a way, it’s to ghost hunting and such what Diagnosis: Murder was to mysteries – a touch lighter at times.
